Hello all,

Indie Cassettes is currently on a hiatus until further notice. Any tapes submitted at this time will not be published.

Thanks!

Modelled on the annual Record Store Day, International Cassette Store Day 2013 is described by its organisers as “a celebration of a physical product that is accessible, fun, cheap and still going strong in the turbulent current musical climate”. It will see a number of limited edition albums released on cassette, and modern classic albums re-released on the much-loved format.

Among the labels involved in International Cassette Store Day will be SEXBEAT, Kissability and Suplex Cassettes, with music from Fucked Up, Los Campesinos! and Fair Ohs appearing among the releases. Meanwhile, Transgressive, Bella Union, Domino, 4AD, Wichita Recordings will be reissuing albums on cassette by artists including At The Drive-In, Pulled Apart By Horses, The Flaming Lips and Deerhunter.

In addition to the musical releases there will also be an event taking place at Rough Trade East on the day (September 7) which will include live bands and DJs. Similar events are expected to take place in Los Angeles, New York and Tokyo. For more information visit the International Cassette Store Day website.

A Short Film About Cassettes - You Need to Hear This

50 Years of the Cassette

Neneh Cherry looks at the role of the cassette in music history including the role of the tape in hip hop in the 80s.

In the 80s Britain was a nation in love with the cassette. At its peak we bought 83 million and the cassette became more popular than vinyl. Then came the runaway success of digital music with formats such as the iPod and the MP3 player and the eject button was pressed on sales of the cassette.

6 Music Celebrates: 50 Years of the Cassette with an hour’s show looking back at the format’s role in music from the early days of hip hop, through the legendary NME C86 Indie compilation tape, the 80s slogan “Home Taping is Killing Music”, to compilations, mixtapes and fond memories of the cassette.

The programme features contributions from artists including Grandmaster Flash, DJ Shadow, The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, The Kills, Friends, Django Django, The Shins, Mike Skinner, Beach House, Foals, The Cribs, The Pastels, The Manics, Mike Smith, David Toop, Neneh Cherry and a tiny label called the Tapeworm, who still produce cassette-only releases.

Review:
Writing and recording music ever since 2006, Jimmy Malzone, going under the name Dark Tones, only really began putting music online in 2009. Jimmy realized his full potential in 2011 when he started taking the project a little more seriously. He combined his passion for the arts, music, and more all into his sound which he describes as DIY and lo-fi. Hoping to keep his music headed in this direction, he hopes it will allow him and his listeners a close bond.

Gab7 - Gab7 - $3.00
Release Date: August 19, 2012

Review:
Gabriel Killhour from Baltimore, Maryland embarks on his debut tape, self-titled Gab7. The relaxing and calm vibes from Side A are great for a night of staying inside with your friends. Though only two songs, they don’t fail to relax a listener and encourage curiosity as to what else Gab7 is capable of producing.

To start off Side B the track Missed My Plane adds a freestyle voice-over, bringing a new sounding element to the tape. The next track, When Sailing Away, returns the tape to the familiar chillwave sound hear earlier. Finally, the last track titled Alfalfa (Sprouts) takes Gab7’s sound and mixes it with sounds similar to that of more recognized artists such as Ratatat. For only $3, getting this tape is a steal for any upcoming artist.

A:
Rat In Our Dreams
Coração (Heart!)
Oh’ia

B:
